The collaborative includes hospitals, residential and community rehabilitation providers, ACC clients and their whanau, brain injury support groups, the Ministry of Health and ACC. Auckland and Counties Manukau hospitals provided the expert advice in the development of the toolkit as part of a wider working group from the collaborative. Purpose of the toolkit? Depending on the severity of a TBI, services offered by a hospital and whether the TBI was obvious on admission, people with TBIs follow different routes through a hospital system. Clinical staff, particularly those outside of neuro-services, are often unaware when to complete assessments which indicate the need for onward rehabilitation services. In addition, clinical staff may be slow to use the ACC Early Cover process or make referrals for onward services which means ACC is not involved in supporting a person’s rehabilitation as soon as possible. This toolkit aims to provide clinical staff across the hospital system including the emergency department and wards where patients with TBI are likely to be admitted, with good quick reference information that enables them to support a patient with a TBI by ensuring they get the right assessments at the right time and the right referrals at the right time. This means patients will have improved access to rehabilitation services and information needed to support their rehabilitation.
